IRONMAN 70.3 Staffordshire is a triathlon featuring some of the county’s most beautiful countryside, quintessentially English villages and the historic Stafford town centre.
The race returns on Sunday 9th June 2019, combining swimming, cycling and running for one of Staffordshire’s toughest sporting challenges.
The route is recognised as one of the flattest and fastest around, making it attractive for first-timers and anyone aiming for a PB.
The route
The race starts with the swim, a one lap, 1.2 mile course at Chasewater Country Park, close to Cannock in the south of the county.
From there, competitors tackle the 56 mile bike route, venturing through stunning Staffordshire scenery including the Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the breath-taking Blithfield Reservoir.
There are plenty of uplifting sights to help with the gruelling cycle too!
After leaving the Cannock Chase AONB, the route takes you through picturesque villages such as Yoxall, nestled in The National Forest, and Admaston, before heading into Stafford for the 13.1 mile run.
And you will also pass some of Staffordshire’s biggest visitor attractions on the way, like St George’s Park, home of the National Football Centre, and the historic Shugborough Estate.
The final section, the run, takes place on the streets of Stafford, with more pleasant backdrops to soak in, like Victoria Park, the jewel in the town centre crown, and the Ancient High House, before the finish in the Market Square.
When did IRONMAN 70.3 come to Staffordshire?
The first IRONMAN 70.3 in Staffordshire was in 2015, when 3000 competitors including world-class triathlete Javier Gomez and celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay took on the challenge.
The men’s race was won by Gomez, while the first over the line in the women’s race was Lucy Gossage.
