Staffordshire Sporting Events
From one of the biggest horse races in the country to great distance runs and bike rides we can all get involved with, there are lots of sporting events in Staffordshire to choose from.
Sporting Events in Staffordshire
Our most popular sporting events are at the award-winning Uttoxeter Racecourse, named one of the best courses in the country – and the best in the Midlands – by VisitEngland in 2017.
It’s the home of Staffordshire’s biggest sporting event, the Midlands Grand National, which attracts over 16000 spectators annually, alongside regular flat and jump-racing meetings throughout the year.
Running Events in Staffordshire
Events like the IRONMAN 70.3 Staffordshire triathlon see thousands of competitors take on the challenge of swimming, cycling and running around the county.
IRONMAN takes place every June and draws professional and amateur athletes alike, with places at international championships at stake and up to 20000 people lining the streets to cheer them on.
And there is plenty of support on offer at the Stafford Half Marathon, which had 4000 entries in 2018, and the Potters Arf in Stoke-on-Trent, regarded as one of the toughest half marathons around thanks to the undulating course.
The ultimate hilly course confronts runners at the Killer Mile, Mow Cop though, where there’s over 500 feet of climbing to tackle, along with a 25% gradient.
Some of our top visitor attractions also host running events.
The 10 mile Cathedral to Castle run connects Lichfield and Tamworth, while the Spitfire 10k at the Royal Air Force Museum provides iconic aircraft for company.
And there are charity fundraisers with stunning Staffordshire scenery at The Trentham Estate, World of Wedgwood and Weston Park.
Cycling Events in Staffordshire
If you prefer your action on two wheels, the Staffordshire Cycling Festival offers two mass participation rides which are open to cyclists of all abilities.
And Eroica Britannia is breath-taking for more reasons than one – the route takes in some of the most captivating countryside and challenging climbs in the Peak District.
Other sporting events in Staffordshire
In 2018, Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent will once again host the UK Corporate Games, a celebration of sport where companies of all shapes and sizes go head-to-head.
There are 23 different sports in the programme, at venues across the north of the county, including football, cricket, poker, ten pin bowling and even dragon boat racing!
Or for something more relaxed, there’s always the National Forest Walking Festival in May, which gives you the chance to slow down, soak in the views and discover some local heritage.
