Fri 8 Sep Arnold Bennett's Watering Holes

A History Walk with Local Historian Mervyn Edwards, of Burslem History Club.

In life and in fiction, the public house has been dominant in Burslem. Describing the scene on the day of Daniel Povey’s funeral, Five Towns novelist Arnold Bennett wrote:

“At the same time one o’clock struck, and the public-houses opened with their customary admirable promptitude. Respectable persons, of course, ignored the public-houses and hastened homewards to a delayed dinner. But in a town of over thirty thousand souls there are sufficient dregs to fill all the public-houses on an occasion of ceremonial excitement.”

In this fast-moving and lively history walk, Mervyn Edwards will look at the pubs featured by Arnold Bennett and discuss how they were presented in his novels.
