Staffordshire Wildlife Trust
The reserve, formerly called Sanitorium Wood, was one of a series of four large area of ancient oak woodland known as the Burntwoods. The abundane of woodland in this area was reflected in it being known as the Woodlands of Staffordshire.

Travelling towards Market Drayton on the A53 from Newcastle, access is via Kestrel Drive, almost immediately after the main road is crossed by the B5026, then via Pheasant Drive. Access is also possible from the B5026 Eccleshall Road one-third of a mile from the A53.
